Simone Manuel made history in the women's 100 meter freestyle event last night. With an insane finish to the race, Manuel came from behind to tie Penny Oleksiak of Canada for first place. They both recorded a time of 52.70, which also set a new Olympic record but even more special the fact that Manuel became the first African-American woman to win an Olympic medal, let alone gold, in a team USA individual swimming event. When Manuel recognized her historic achievement, she broke down in tears. An incredible accomplishment for a twenty year old Olympian.
